June 29, 2004  The News Sun letter to the editor from Illinois Congressman Mark Steven Kirk

Horse slaughter bill

On June 12, The News Sun ran a letter to the editor from Barbara Fronczek.  She supports efforts to ban horse slaughter for human consumption both in Illinois and on the federal level.

She urged citizens of Lake County to encourage their federal representatives, myself included, to co-sponsor House Resolution 857, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act.

HR 857 was introduced by Rep. John Sweeney, R-N.Y., on Feb. 13, 2003. I have been a co-sponsor of this legislation since Oct. 2, 2003. This bill would prevent the slaughter of horses in and from the United States for human consumption, as well as prohibiting the trade and transport of horseflesh and live horses intended for human consumption.  I strongly support HR 857 and urge my colleagues to do the same. I do not think we should allow the slaughter of horses.
