I’m
writing to ask your support for my Kaufman mayor Paula Bacon.
On
March 4, 2004
,
5-7 PM
, I am hosting a “Ladies’ Tea” for Mayor Bacon at my home, and included
with the invitation will be a list of those serving on the “hostess
committee” (sorry guys –women only).
We are already actively recruiting women voters in Kaufman to serve on
the committee, but we would like to expand our committee membership to include
women outside Kaufman.
*If
this is too much reading for you busy folks, skip down to the box set off
with **************
We
feel that a long list of names on the committee will demonstrate the depth of
support for Paula in our community, but I would also like to list names from
across
Texas
and throughout the
U.S.
of women who are committed to putting an end to American live horse slaughter
for human consumption in
Europe
and
Asia
.
Mayor
Bacon has been quite vocal in her stance on closing the Dallas Crown horse
slaughter plant in Kaufman.
- Paula
wrote and called our State Representative Betty Brown in March, 2003
asking her to withdraw her Texas HB 1324 that would have legalized the two
Texas
horse slaughter plants.
- Paula
appeared in Tiff Bartlett’s “Blood Country…a Texas Shame” video,
standing at the fence separating Dallas Crown from my farm, and said, “I
have a very emotional response to this, and I can hear the horses
nickering and whinnying off in the distance, and I just feel a sense of
horror in my stomach and in my heart at what’s either happening or about
to happen over there…”
- In
the mayor’s first (July, 2003) newsletter to Kaufman voters, she exposed
Dallas Crown’s numerous violations of city ordinances as had already
been reported in the June 19, 2003 San Antonio Current.
- In
November, 2003 Kaufman’s city attorney attacked the mayor with a
“resolution” for publishing her newsletters (the newsletters exposed
Kaufman had paid almost $1/2 million in attorneys fees over the last two
years while collecting only $1.25 million in property tax revenue last
year), and the city attorney convinced the other six council members to
accept and approve the resolution rebuking the mayor and asking that her
newsletter to voters be stopped. Paula
publicly answered the resolution with another newsletter, which
reprinted the council resolution in full, along with her comments.
The city attorney had written, “WHEREAS,
in her publication Mayor Bacon appears to take on the cause of a confidant
and political supporter [Mary Nash] with regard to causing Dallas Crown to
cease operations in the City of Kaufman;”
"Mayor’s Comment: Others
who have taken on the cause to force Dallas Crown to cease operations are
115* members of the US House of Representatives sponsoring a bill to end
horse slaughter in the US (HR 857, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention
Act); 10 members of the Illinois Assembly sponsoring a bill to end horse
slaughter in Illinois; the 78th Texas Legislature; and the
State of California. Dallas
Crown operates in violation of
Texas
law (Texas Agriculture §149).”
*The newsletter was written in November; the cosponsorship number for the
American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act has since grown to 166.
- Most
recently, Mayor Paula appeared with me in a taped interview for a CBS-11
Dallas news investigative reporter who plans a Tracy Rowlett sweeps week
special report on horse slaughter. I
will let you know after I learn when that report will air, probably late
February.

I
am very excited about this project as I feel it will be a tangible way to show
people in Kaufman that the anti-slaughter movement reaches far beyond our
little town of 6,600.
Please
send your personal reply email to me at NashHulme@msn.com.
Remember, women only...sorry guys.
I
will be adding names to the list until Sunday, February 22.
