Subject: Attention Illinois Residents! Update on Horse Slaughter Bill.
ASPCA Legislative Alert

Dear Victoria,

Good News! SB 1921 PASSES COMMITTEE HB 648 PASSES SENATE!  Help Still Needed!

It’s a miracle!  Thanks to your help, SB 1921 to stop the slaughter of horses for human consumption made it through the Executive Committee.  Now it will be voted on in the full house.  Representatives from the ASPCA, Humane Society of Central Illinois, Humane PAC, and numerous horse organizations were on hand to support this important bill.

Unfortunately many opponents are actively trying to kill this humane bill.  The opponents include Donna Ewing representing the Horse Council, and representatives from the Farm Bureau, Pork Producers, Cavel, and the Beef Council.

The Department of Agriculture remained neutral on the bill.

The legislators who voted to stop the slaughter of horses were:

Rep. Daniel Burke
Rep. Edward Acevedo
Rep. Richard Bradley
Rep. Ralph Capparelli
Rep. Lovana Jones
Rep. Larry McKeon
Rep. Robert Molaro

These legislators who voted in favor of slaughtering horses for human food were:

Rep. Bill Black
Rep. Bob Biggins
Rep. Brent Hassert

Rep. Skip Saviano was absent during the voting and Rep. Carole Pankau abstained.

Another equally important but less talked about bill, HB 648 passed the Senate.  This bill contains needed clarifications so animal shelters can purchase the euthanasia drugs they need to humanely dispose of animals.  It amends the Humane Euthanasia in Animal Shelters Act.

Please call your state representative and senator today and ask them to support SB 1921 to stop the slaughter of horses for human consumption. Ask your state representative to support HB 648 to amend the Humane Euthanasia in Animal Shelters Act.   Click here for a list of your Illinois Senators and Representatives.

Politics is not a spectator sport!  Sit up and speak out for animals.  Thank you so much for your efforts!  Please spread the word.
