Subject: [againstslaughter] Stephenville Auction and my deepest regrets

I went to the auction last night, not preparing for anything special and only having 200.00 in spare change with me.  I will regret that for the rest of my life. I missed out on my dream horse who went for a mere 270.00.

The pmu mares were there by the dozens. Percherons, belgians, spotted drafts, and some gorgeous smaller roan drafts. A huge belgian mare "picked me". She followed me around like a puppy and buried her face in my arms when I would stop to hug and scratch her. My heart
was breaking and I missed her because of 70.00. Most all of them went to good homes and were sold as teams. There will be more next month. The prices ranged from 250.00-400.00. I would not have a way to get a horse that big home anyway I keep telling myself. One man bought several to breed mules from.

The auction itself seemed to be doing good, still showing a great attempt to improve their treatment of the horses. I saw nothing beaten or bloodied. I am so happy about this and I think it is because of all of us.

I spoke with Mr. Jones very briefly and he seemed genuinely friendly. We did not speak of slaughter, only of the mares and he told me he hoped they all got good homes and that he will be picking up 35 this week. He did not seem to be buying much.

The mares were cheap. The other horse prices were about par.
