Subject: [Texasalert] Jan. 23: Senator Ellis Receiving
Award for Helping Defeat Horse Slaughter
SENATOR ELLIS TO RECEIVE AWARD FOR HELPING TO DEFEAT HORSE
SLAUGHTER
Senator Rodney Ellis will be awarded the 2003 "Humane-itarian" Award
from the Texas Humane Legislation Network (www.thln.com)
on Friday, January 23, in Houston. Joining Network members and Senator
Ellis will be members of HPD's
mounted patrol unit.
Senator Ellis will receive this award for his courageous and successful fight to
defeat House Bill 1324. This legislation would have allowed the widespread
slaughter of horses and existence of horse processing factories in Texas.
Senator Ellis successfully "tagged" the legislation during the 2003
legislative session. His actions single-handedly prevented the legislation
from passing.

controversy from the pro-slaughter opposition. He held his ground to do what was
right and we are extremely grateful," said Anne Coller, president of the
Texas Humane Legislation Network.
This event is particularly timely given the recent national media exposure
related to Premarin and the many horses previously involved in the production of
Premarin. See http://www.fund4horses.org/pdf/dateline_pmu_segment.pdf.
