Subject: [againstslaughter] Protest against the rebuilding of the Cavel live horse slaughterhouse in Dekalb, IL

TO The ASPCA:

Hello, I am not certain that I am sending this to the correct divisions of your organization; if not I hope you will pass this information on to them. A group of very concerned horse owners and animal lovers are coordinating a vigil in Dekalb, IL later this month to educate the general population in Illinois and protest the rebuilding of a foreign-owned live horse slaughterhouse there. The city of Dekalb, IL has issued a special purpose permit to Cavel, a foreign owned company, that can be withdrawn, and we are hoping that the vigil will cause them to rethink the impact of having Cavel back in business in their town.

I am including the candlelight vigil flyer below instead of as an attachment. PLEASE include this information on your website and in your newsletter to help us make more voters aware of the travesty of live horse slaughter in America.

I greatly appreciate all that ASPCA does for animal welfare, especially your support of H.B.857, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. I am contributing to you through CFC by payroll deductions this coming year to help you in your much needed efforts.

If you have any questions about this vigil, which is scheduled for September 27,2003 in Dekalb, IL, please contact me. If I do not have the information you need, I can put you in direct contact with the vigil coordinator. As horse owners, I and my friends greatly appreciate any exposure to your membership that you can provide for this effort to help end live horseslaughter.

Sincerely,

Martha E. Hahn

ATTEND THE CANDLELIGHT VIGIL TO PROTEST CAVEL REBUILDING!
JOIN HORSE OWNERS AND CONCERNED ANIMAL LOVERS FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY TO HELP THEM TO STOP THE REOPENING OF CAVELīS HORSE SLAUGHTERHOUSE!

Horse lovers, owners, and horse protection/welfare organizations have set up a
candlelight vigil in DeKalb City on Saturday 27th. September 3-9 pm at Hopkins Park, (1403 Sycamore Rd., DeKalb, Illinois) to protest against the rebuilding of the Cavelīs slaughterhouse. The main objectives of this vigil are:

-Protest the rebuilding of Cavelīs horse slaughterhouse, and show DeKalbīs officials the strong opposition of DeKalb's citizens and Americans from all over the country to this rebuilding in order to persuade them to stop and block the rebuilding (which is possible under Section 14.03.06 of the DeKalb Zoning Ordinance).

-Inform and educate people of the horrors of the foreign-owned horse slaughter industry: Why live horse slaughter is NOT necessary and why slaughter is NOT the only option.

-Inform and educate people in support of bill HR 857, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, a Federal Bill which is pending in Congress that would PROHIBIT THE LIVE SLAUGHTER OF HORSES IN AMERICA AS WELL AS THE EXPORTATION AND IMPORTATION OF HORSES FOR SLAUGHTER AND THE TRADE OF HORSE FLESH.

The Candlelight Vigil will consist of:

-An informative Awareness Fair. There will be fun activities for kids, face painting, music, and other events, in addition to the very serious truth of Cavel and horse slaughter.

-A series of speeches from horse protection organizations and individuals opposed to horse slaughter and the reopening of Cavel.

-The Candlelight Vigil: The Candles will be lighted in a silent demonstration in memory and honor of the 3 million horses killed by the foreign owned horse slaughter industry.

Attend the vigil and urge family and friends to do the same!!!
Your assistance and involvement are VITAL to prevent this atrocity occurring again in Dekalb.
