After getting the insights from Lesley's report and seeing her video, if anyone
thinks that horse slaughter is only a Texas or Illinois issue, then that person
is simply ignorant.
I finally watched the CD sent by Lesley from Animals-Angels. The 30 min video is
mostly about hog and cattle and only the last 5 min is about horse transports.
It shows Bouvry Feedlot in Canada with 13,000 horses and another feedlot where
horses are fattened up for Japan where the horses are shipped to live,
slaughtered and eaten within 3 hours (apparently, Japanese like horse meat to be
very fresh). It also shows the distance horses have to travel from sources in
Canada to Ottawa where Bouvry appears to be at? They also started trailing one
double-decker trailer from UT to TX but were chased away by the owner of the rig
who didn't want his driver to be exposed breaking the law of driven hours, etc.
In general, the video gave me a great insight into the slaughter industry in
general and the laws concerning the transports (Lesley has nice comparisons of
European vs Canadian law displayed).
