Subject: Monday Update on Horse Slaughter Amendment
Update on Horse Slaughter Amendment to SB 1413
Date of Alert: May 26, 2003.
A huge THANKS to all of you who responded to our Action Alert
yesterday urging you to contact all state senators and the Lt. Governor in
opposition to House Amendment 2 (a repeal of Ag Code 149, legalizing Horse
Slaughter for human consumption) which was placed on Senate Bill
1413. Your calls, faxes and emails were heard "loud and clear"
at the capital today! As of this evening, we are confident that
the Senate will not concur with this House amendment. The vote to
determine concurrence should happen tomorrow (Tuesday, May 27) after 10:00 am,
but we don’t know exactly when.
Anyone who can be at the Capitol during the Senate session tomorrow should go
to the 3rd floor gallery. Once the vote is taken, a conference
committee will be appointed, and we must immediately
begin lobbying the Senators appointed to this committee.
If you can’t go to the Capitol tomorrow, please watch your emails. We
will send another email as soon as we know the names of the conference
committee appointees, and we will all need to call and fax them asking that
they not allow any amendment to SB 1413 that would insert the
Representative Betty Brown language legalizing horse slaughter.
The next email will give you names, phone numbers, and fax numbers for the
Senators in the conference committee. As always, thank you for your
incredible response to our calls for help in working to keep horse slaughter
illegal in Texas!

Cile Holloway, President
