Subject: Re: Texas A&M Vet School's position on
Texas horse slaughter -House Bill 1324
Ms. Nash,
To confirm our phone conversation of last week, Dean Adams is not aware
of any letter from our college in support of HB 1324. However, we
cannot speak for any individual faculty member(s) that may have provided
their personal opinion. Please also note that the e-mail you received
from UC Davis reflects a public university's position in regards to
supporting specific legislation.

Horse issueMartha - Thank you again for helping me when we spoke by
phone on Wednesday about whether or not Texas A&M Vet School had written
a letter supporting Betty Brown's horse slaughter bill, HB 1324.
You told me that Dr. H. Richard Adams, Dean of the College of
Veterinary Medicine, Texas A&M, had no knowledge that any letter had
been written in behalf of the school regarding the horse slaughter
bill.
Would you please send me an email message confirming that?
At the bottom of this message is an email message I received from Lynn
Narlesky, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis
that she sent me as a result of my inquiry.
And below is an excerpt of testimony given by Palestine veterinarian,
Dr. Steve Hicks, at the March 25 hearing before the Texas House
Committee on Agriculture & Livestock. This is the testimony that
prompted my call to you.
Let me give you a list of the organizations that are for allowing
this option of horse slaughter plants to stay in existence. The
American Association of Equine Practitioners which is the largest equine
veterinary organization in the world. Their position is they are for
this. We have letters from several veterinary schools. Oklahoma
State
University, California Veterinary School at Davis, Texas A&M University
stating that in their opinion that these plants..without these plants
the potential of abuse for these unwanted horses is much greater than
what these horses face at the plants.
Thank you very much for taking time to help me with this.

Dear Ms. Nash:
I looked into your question about whether a letter from the school
might support horse slaughter. To my knowledge, our school has not
produced such a letter.
Our faculty sometimes offer personal opinions based on their expertise,
but they would only speak for themselves. As an educational institution,
we provide relevant scientific information to decisionmakers, but we are
prevented from supporting specific legislation--in California or in any
other state.
I hope this answers your question. Thank you for your inquiry and your
interest in the School of Veterinary Medicine.
