Subject: [againstslaughter] Schering-Plough Animal
Health Corporation, #1
To
Whom It May Concern:
As per a telephone conversation on 3/17/03 with Dr. Armstrong of the Technical
Services, Companion Animal division of the Schering-Plough Animal Health
Corporation in a discussion of manufactured equine pharmaceuticals and human
consumption.
Dr. Armstrong explained that none of the equine pharmaceuticals manufactured by
Schering-Plough Animal Health Corporation were to be given to an equine intended
for human consumption. They are marked clearly as stating, "'Not for
use in horses intended for food".
Dr. Armstrong was unable to provide me with a withdrawal period of said
pharmaceuticals as to the best of his knowledge, this has never been established
in equines nor was he aware of such a study being either submitted or reviewed
by the FDA. This information was further verified through calls made to
equine veterinarians.
A study was found on the FDA site concerning Penicillin G Procaine Suspension,
NADA 065-505, Microcillin-AG ®, with withdrawal periods listed However,
these withdrawal periods were only established on those animals commonly
considered food animals. They are as follows:
"Not for use in horses intended for food.
Milk taken from animals during treatment and for forty-eight (48) hours (4
milkings) after the last treatment must not be used for food. The drug should be
discontinued for the following time periods before treated animals are
slaughtered for food:
Calves: 7 days
Cattle: 4 days
Sheep: 8 days
Swine: 6 days"
