Labs.
Hi,
A friend of mine has asked me to post the following reply letter she
has received from Wyeth Labs. regarding how they will manage with the
mares that will no longer produce PMU. Please, pay special attention
to the last parragraph which explains how to adopt one of these mares
and foals.
Thank you for your inquiry regarding PMU horses. Mr. Steven Tasher
has reviewed your letter and forwarded it to me for response.
Wyeth has set up a $3.7 million Equine Placement Trust Fund to assist
ranchers financially with the movement of horses no longer required
for PMU collection to various productive markets. An advisory board
of several prominent equine experts has been established to oversee
the trust fund, review proposals from equine groups, identify
opportunities to market or place thehorses, and ensure appropriate
standards of care for these horses.
Under the auspices of the Equine Placement Trust Fund, a pilot
program is underway to pay for the veterinary fees, border fees, and
shipping costs associated with transporting horses to markets across
North America. The North American Equine Ranching Information Council
(NAERIC) is coordinating the pilot program.
Wyeth has a longstanding commitment to equine stewardship. To that
end, the company is provoiding ranchers, who are no longer involved
in PMU collection, with funding for feed and herd health programs. In
addition, Wyeth is requiring these ranchers to comply with the
Recommended Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Horses in
PMU Operations and to participate in herd checks and independent
veterinary inspections. We have taken these steps to assure that the
horses remaining on the farms are well cared for.
