Subject: [againstslaughter] Re: AQHA Responds to
Allegations From Horse Charity
In case anybody is interested in the exact study Ward Stutz was referring to in
his statement to BloodHorse concerning the independent scientific study, I
finally found it! He actually named this specific article to me in our
discussion. The study/article is:
Grandin T, McGee K, Lanier JL (1999)
Prevalence of severe welfare problems in horses that arrive at slaughter plants.
J. Am. Vet. Med. Assoc. 214 1531-1533
I would love to read this article... but again... you cannot get it off the
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association without subscriber
access!!

Correct spelling of veterinarian's name is Dr. Temple Grandin. I went to
the JAVMA webpage and you must have subscriber access to get any of the
articles. But.. I couldn't find it anyway.
Maybe I'm just missing it. If anybody else is able to locate this,
please let me know. Thanks.

I just had a somewhat lengthy conversation with Ward Stutz, the person who was
quoted in the BloodHorse article. He seemed very nice, was easy to get a
hold of, and was very willing to discuss this with me.As far as the
independent scientific study he mentions in the
article, he told me this was done by Dr. Temple Gradin with the Colorado State
University. Big Surprise!! When I asked him what classifies it as a
"scientific" study, he told me that he believed that meant it was done
by a university or veterinarian. He also said he thought the study was
published in the Journal of Americian Veterinary Medical Associations.
Another Big surprise huh!!!
Anyway... I am not nearly as "educated" on all the issues as many on
this board are.I would recommend some of our players with a lot of knowledge in
all the issues contact him, those who can give him to good arguments. Not
that it will make a difference. But... he can
be reached by calling the AQHA at 806-376-4811.
"That said, AQHA does have serious concerns about any federally imposed ban
on processing facilities. Chief among our concerns is taking away a viable
humane euthanasia option, which would increase instances of abuse and neglect of
unwanted horses. This has been supported by an independent, scientific study. We
do not want to see horses starved, mistreated, neglected or shipped to other
countries where processing facilities are not regulated by U.S. law or USDA
officials."
